What’s Best for Me is a five minute short film that was intended to be submitted by director Yiqi Wang as part of their application to top film grad schools across America (they are now enrolled in USC School of Cinematic Arts). The film itself is about the struggles of being queer in a traditional Asian household, specifically tackling the anxiety one has in regards to coming out to their grandparents.
Cowriting What’s Best for Me with Yiqi was certainly a challenge that I was more than happy to welcome as going over serious or mundane issues in a narrative film wasn’t exactly common. As someone, who isn’t Chinese or queer, I am very thankful to have Yiqi and their experience to cowrite this story with me as we had to be very precise in terms of detail, pacing, and structure to get the film within five pages. What resulted in a whole summer’s worth of hard work was certainly one of my proudest projects to this date as the film managed to not only get Yiqi into grad school but was also as profound as I wanted it to be within the given time.
