Trouble in a colorful paradise

This series combines the vibrant colorful tones of modern day design with the melancholic mundane reality of being overworked, fired, lonely, anxious, and overall being human. I decided to take this upon as a project just to showcase how ironic today’s world is and how beautiful yet sad it is to see all this happen to real people.

As most Americans go through what is called a nine to five just so they can secure ends meet in today’s money hungry society, I decided to do a series on what happens after or in between everyone’s nine to five called: 5-9. This vicious cycle, as you can see, starts from when this person gets out of work, takes a break, falls asleep on his couch, and wakes up to the sun that only brings dread to what will be his new day.

Downtown areas are probably one of the most interesting places in every city, littered with interesting architecture and bustling with people. On this very day that I decided to visit San Diego’s downtown area, it was the opposite of bustling and in fact empty and quiet. The Quiet City captures this emptiness and also the peacefulness of being in a downtown area that isn’t quiet like downtown.

One of my earliest photographic works is heavily inspired by Terrence Malick’s film Day’s of Heaven, which shot all of its outdoor scenes only during golden hour, in which they spent the whole day setting up for their shots in this small time frame. My series Hours of Heaven tries to simply capture the beauty that combines the beautiful golden light in this hour along with the purposeful shadows it brings to each place.
